Many repairs do not require taking a vessel off-hire. Riding squads, port stays and even work carried out at anchorage can close out a surprising share of a ship's maintenance backlog.
What counts as a voyage repair
A voyage repair, often carried out by what is called a riding squad, is work done by a mobile team that boards the vessel at a port call, anchorage or bunkering stop and works alongside the crew while normal cargo operations continue, rather than work that requires the ship to go off-hire at a yard. The defining feature is that the vessel keeps earning while the repair happens around it.
This is different from an afloat repair carried out at a yard berth, which still takes the vessel off its trading schedule even though it stays in the water. A true voyage repair fits around the ship's ongoing port rotation, and the team sometimes stays aboard for one or more legs to finish a larger scope, disembarking only once the job or the agreed portion of it is complete.
The commercial logic is straightforward. A vessel earning freight while a small team works on deck or in the engine room is a far better outcome for the owner than the same vessel idle at a repair berth, provided the work genuinely does not need the ship out of the water or off its schedule. This is the basic trade-off that makes voyage repair attractive whenever it is genuinely available.
Typical jobs suited to voyage repair
Machinery overhauls that do not need dry-docking, auxiliary engines, pumps, purifiers and compressors, along with electrical and automation work, valve overhaul, piping repairs, above-waterline coating touch-ups and safety equipment servicing, are all regularly handled as voyage repairs. Much of a vessel's routine maintenance backlog, in fact, falls into this category rather than waiting for the next scheduled docking.
Some underwater work also fits this category. Class-approved in-water surveys, propeller polishing, cathodic protection checks and, in certain cases, underwater hull cleaning or minor repairs carried out by diving teams can cover ground that would otherwise wait for a dry-dock, and doing them during a normal port call can meaningfully extend the interval before major underwater work becomes urgent.
Deciding what belongs on a voyage repair list rather than the next docking specification is usually a joint call between the ship's chief engineer, who knows the day-to-day condition of the equipment, and the technical superintendent, who has visibility of the whole maintenance history and the upcoming docking scope. The busier a vessel's trading pattern, the more valuable this category of work becomes.
What cannot be done underway
Anything requiring the vessel out of the water, full steel renewal below the waterline, tailshaft withdrawal, rudder unshipping, complete blasting and coating of the underwater hull, still needs a dry-dock, as does any large scope needing extended access or work that would interrupt propulsion or steering reliability underway.
A reasonable rule of thumb is that a job is a voyage repair candidate if it does not compromise the vessel's seaworthiness or the crew's ability to operate it safely for the rest of the voyage, and if it can be completed within port time or an agreed onboard period without disrupting cargo operations. Anything that fails either test should be scheduled for the next docking rather than attempted on the road.
When in doubt, the safer default is to treat a borderline job as a docking item rather than push it into a voyage repair slot, since a repair attempted underway and found to be more involved than expected is far harder to recover from than one simply deferred to a planned docking. This distinction is worth writing down clearly in the vessel's own maintenance planning, not left to informal judgement each time.
Planning a voyage repair around the ship's schedule
Planning starts with identifying the job scope from crew defect reports, then coordinating boarding at a port where the vessel has enough alongside or anchorage time, arranging travel, visas and customs for the team well ahead, and lining up spare parts delivery with the same port call so the technicians are not left waiting for a part once they are already aboard.
For larger scopes, a squad may board for one leg and disembark at the next port, extending the available working hours beyond a single stay. This needs close coordination with the ship's master, the owner's technical manager and the local agents at each port for embarkation and disembarkation, and it usually works best when it is planned into the voyage from the outset rather than added once the vessel is already under way.
Budget planning also differs slightly from a docking. Because a voyage repair does not carry yard overheads such as dock dues, costs are usually lower for comparable work, but the logistics premium, travel, freight for spares, agency fees at each port, can offset some of that saving on jobs that need several boardings. The best outcomes tend to come from planning this into the voyage well before the port call, not deciding at the last minute.
Safety and coordination with the crew
Riding squad members work within the vessel's own safety management system, attend toolbox talks, and coordinate their tasks with cargo operations and watchkeeping so their work does not interfere with the crew's critical duties. A squad that ignores the ship's own routines, rather than fitting into them, tends to create friction that slows the job down rather than speeding it up.
