The right time for a main engine overhaul is set by running hours, condition data and the manufacturer's maintenance schedule together, not by a single fixed interval. Here is how owners usually decide.
Running hours as the starting point
Every main engine manufacturer publishes maintenance intervals tied to running hours for major components, cylinder units, bearings, fuel injection equipment and turbochargers, giving a baseline schedule that technical managers track against the engine's logged hours since new or since the last overhaul. This baseline is the first thing any planning discussion starts from.
These intervals are a starting point rather than a rigid deadline. Two sister vessels running the same engine can reach their due hours on very different calendar dates, depending on trading pattern, load profile, and how much time the vessel spends at low load or idling, so the hour count alone rarely tells the whole story.
For older engines without extensive onboard monitoring, the running hour log combined with the chief engineer's own notes on performance often remains the most reliable input available, and a technical manager reviewing it consistently over several years develops a good feel for how a particular engine is actually ageing. This blended judgement, part manufacturer guidance and part lived experience, is what good technical management actually looks like in practice.
Condition monitoring changes the picture
Alongside running hours, technical managers track condition indicators, cylinder oil consumption, exhaust temperatures, vibration, and increasingly data from onboard condition monitoring systems, to see whether wear is tracking normally or accelerating faster than the hour count alone would suggest.
Where condition data looks good, some owners extend an overhaul slightly within the limits the manufacturer and class allow. Where data shows early wear or an anomaly, an overhaul may be brought forward rather than waiting for the hour-based due date, since deferring a genuine problem usually costs more in the end than acting on it early.
None of this replaces the manufacturer's own guidance, and any decision to depart meaningfully from the published interval, in either direction, is normally discussed with the engine maker's technical service and, where the item affects a survey requirement, with the class surveyor as well. The goal is never to guess, but to have enough reliable data that the decision explains itself.
Coordinating overhaul with the docking cycle
Because a major overhaul often needs a period alongside or in dock, and because it competes for the same yard slots and specialist labour as steel and coating work, technical managers try to align it with a planned dry-docking or a scheduled port stay long enough for the job, rather than treating it as a separate event that competes for the vessel's calendar on its own.
This coordination also lets the same riding squad or yard team cover engine work alongside other jobs in one mobilisation, which is generally more efficient than sending a separate specialist team for the engine alone at an unrelated time, both in cost and in the number of times the vessel's schedule is interrupted.
Where the overhaul due date and the docking due date do not naturally line up, owners sometimes bring the overhaul forward by a modest margin rather than schedule an entirely separate yard period, weighing the small extra cost of early replacement parts against the larger cost of a second mobilisation. This kind of forward thinking is what keeps a vessel's annual schedule predictable rather than a series of separate emergencies.
What a main engine overhaul involves
Scope varies with the interval reached. A minor overhaul might cover a subset of cylinder units and valve and injection equipment checks, while a major overhaul covers all units, bearings and turbocharger work, following the manufacturer's job cards and using class-approved procedures where the work affects items under survey.
Whatever the scope, the job closes out with function tests and, where applicable, a sea trial or dock trial to confirm the engine performs to specification before the vessel returns to normal service, with results recorded for the technical file and the next survey so the history is there when the same decision needs to be made again.
Spare parts planning follows the same logic as any other major job, key components with long lead times need to be ordered well before the overhaul date, and a technical manager who leaves this until the engine is already opened up is choosing to extend the vessel's time out of service unnecessarily. This discipline, closing the loop on every overhaul with proper records, is a small habit with a large payoff over a vessel's working life.
