Why planning starts six months out
A dry-docking is a fixed-duration event competing for limited yard capacity, and owners who leave planning until a few weeks before arrival usually end up with a worse dock slot, a higher price and a specification put together in a hurry. Starting six to nine months ahead gives enough time to gather survey history, confirm class requirements and get budget approval before commercial pressure forces rushed decisions that are hard to reverse once the ship is already on its way to the yard.
The date is rarely arbitrary. It is normally set by the class renewal or special survey window, which falls on a roughly five year cycle, combined with flag state certificate renewals, charter party obligations and the vessel's trading commitments. Working backward from that date, rather than forward from when someone remembers the docking is due, is what keeps the whole process under control from the first meeting onward.
Early planning also gives the owner room to negotiate rather than accept whatever slot is left. A technical manager who approaches several yards six months out can compare price, schedule and technical fit properly; a manager calling around eight weeks before a survey deadline is usually just looking for anyone with an open dock, and that difference shows up later in both cost and quality. References are most useful when they come with specifics, how the yard handled a scope change, how it communicated a delay, rather than a general statement that the previous job went well, since almost every yard will say that about itself. Class, flag and statutory surveys during the docking
