Challenge
An offshore project for TengizChevrOil at the Caspian Sea needed 1,360 tonnes of special-grade steel delivered during winter, when the region's waterways were frozen and the normal sea route into the Caspian was not usable. A frozen waterway does not just slow a shipment down, it can close the route entirely for the season, and an offshore project waiting on steel has no way to substitute the material or continue without it.
Approach
YEKE arranged overland logistics by coach from Turkey, routing the shipment through Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan to reach the Caspian project site by land instead of by the frozen sea route, coordinating customs and transit across three countries for a single delivery.
Outcome
The 1,360 tonnes of special-grade steel were delivered to the offshore project despite the winter freeze, keeping the TengizChevrOil project supplied on schedule through a route built specifically around the season's constraint.
