What actually wears a teak deck out
Teak is naturally dense and oil rich, which is why it has been used on decks for generations, but the wood does not fail from sun and salt alone. Most premature wear comes from how the deck is treated: harsh chemical cleaners that strip natural oils, pressure washers held too close and used too often, and stiff bristle brushes scrubbed hard against the grain all remove sound wood far faster than weather ever would.
A deck cleaned gently and caulked correctly can genuinely last for decades, since the wear that matters is measured in millimetres of surface thickness lost per year, not in how the timber looks after one hard season. Understanding that distinction changes how an owner or captain should think about every cleaning and maintenance decision made over the life of the deck.
Wear is rarely even across a deck either: areas that see constant foot traffic, near companionways or cleats, burnish and compact faster than shaded corners, while furniture left in one place for a season can trap moisture underneath and leave a lighter patch once moved. Reading these patterns helps a carpenter target maintenance where it is actually needed, rather than treating the whole deck as a single uniform surface.
Daily and seasonal cleaning that protects the wood
Regular rinsing with fresh water removes salt crystals before they can work into the grain, and a soft brush used along the plank, never across it, lifts dirt without cutting into the fibres. Teak specific cleaners, used sparingly, do less damage than generic deck cleaners formulated for fibreglass, which are often too aggressive for a natural material that needs its surface oils left intact.
Seasonal deep cleans are useful, but they should be occasional, not routine, because every clean that uses acid, bleach or a two part deck cleaner takes a small amount of surface wood with it. A deck that looks slightly weathered between cleans is not a problem; a deck cleaned aggressively every week is one that will need re-sanding, or replacing, years earlier than it should.
Grit tracked aboard on shoes is an underrated source of wear, since sand and small stones ground into the surface by foot traffic act like fine sandpaper every time someone walks across the deck. A simple habit of rinsing shoes or removing them before boarding does more to protect the surface over a season than any single cleaning product.
Caulking: the seams matter as much as the planks
The black seams between teak planks are not decorative, they are a flexible sealant that keeps water from working down between the boards and into the deck structure below. Caulking degrades before the wood around it usually does, through UV exposure, movement and general wear, and once it lifts, cracks or pulls away from the plank edge, water finds its way underneath far faster than it would through sound wood.
Recaulking a deck section by section, rather than waiting for the whole deck to need attention at once, keeps the underlying structure protected and spreads the cost and disruption over time rather than concentrating it into one large project. Good caulking work is unglamorous but it is one of the highest value jobs on a teak deck, because it protects everything beneath the visible surface.
Not every caulking compound behaves the same way against teak's natural oils and seasonal movement, and a compound chosen for the wrong application can fail to bond properly or harden in a way that cracks rather than flexes. Experienced caulkers know which products suit which conditions, and that judgment is part of what separates a seam that lasts a decade from one that needs redoing within a couple of seasons.
When sanding helps and when it just removes deck
Sanding restores a level, even surface and removes ingrained staining that cleaning alone cannot lift, but every pass takes wood thickness that never comes back. A teak deck has a finite number of sandings in it before the plank thickness above the fastenings becomes too thin to sand safely again, so each sanding decision should weigh whether the deck genuinely needs it or whether cleaning and spot repair would do.
A skilled deck carpenter sands only where needed, blends repairs into the surrounding surface, and keeps the plank crown consistent rather than flattening it, since a flattened deck sheds water less effectively and looks subtly wrong even to an untrained eye. This is craftsmanship rather than a mechanical process, and it is where experience shows most clearly.
Tooling matters too: a random orbital sander in careful hands removes wood evenly, while an aggressive belt sander in the wrong hands can dig grooves into soft grain within seconds. Dust extraction and proper masking of surrounding fittings, hardware and gelcoat also protect the rest of the boat while the deck itself is being worked on.
Knowing when replacement is the right call
Eventually a deck reaches the point where sanding is no longer possible without exposing fastenings, where seams have opened beyond what recaulking can fix, or where individual planks have cupped, split or rotted past repair, and at that point renewal, rather than further maintenance, is the honest recommendation. Replacing a deck is a significant project, but done well it resets the clock for another few decades of service.
