A superyacht refit runs on sequence as much as skill: survey and scope come first, structure and systems follow, joinery and finishing come next, and sea trials confirm everything before handover.
Defining what a refit actually covers
The word refit covers a wide range of projects, from a cosmetic update, new upholstery, paint and some joinery refresh, through to a full technical refit that touches engines, generators, electrical systems, tankage and structure alongside everything visible to guests and owners. The scale of the project shapes every decision that follows, so the first real step of any refit is agreeing, in plain terms, what kind of project this actually is.
Confusion here is one of the most common sources of budget overrun on refit projects generally: an owner picturing a cosmetic freshen up and a project manager scoping a technical overhaul are working from two different projects, even if they are both using the word refit to describe them. Getting this alignment right before contracts are signed saves difficult conversations later.
Brokers and marketing materials do not always help, since the same word is used to describe a light touch-up before a sale and a multi-month technical overhaul, and a prospective owner reading a listing that mentions a recent refit has no way of knowing which end of that spectrum actually applies without asking directly what was done.
The survey and scope: setting the project before it starts
A thorough pre refit survey covers the hull, structure, systems, and interior condition, and it should be conducted by people with no incentive to either inflate or minimise what they find, since the survey's findings become the backbone of the scope of work document that every subsequent quote, schedule and contract is built on. Skipping or rushing this stage is a false economy: work discovered mid project, after steel has been cut or panelling removed, is always more disruptive and expensive than the same work identified and budgeted for in advance.
The scope of work that comes out of survey should be specific enough that different yards or contractors can quote against the same document, rather than each interpreting vague instructions differently. A well written scope also separates firm requirements from optional or conditional items, so that when unexpected findings inevitably arise during the work itself, there is already a framework for deciding what gets added and what gets deferred.

Budgeting and scheduling around a fixed yard slot

The structural and systems phase
Once the boat is in the yard, structural work comes first for the same reason it does in any restoration or new build: everything else depends on it being right, and disturbing it later undoes finished work elsewhere. Steel or composite repairs, engine room modifications, and any structural changes to accommodate new systems or layout changes happen in this phase, generally with the interior stripped back enough to give trades full access.
Systems work, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, navigation and entertainment technology, tends to run in parallel with structural work where possible, since much of it involves running new cabling or pipework through spaces that are already open. Coordination between these trades matters enormously here: a pipe run finalised before the electrical route is planned, or vice versa, creates conflicts that are expensive to resolve once either system is installed.

Joinery, finishing and the details that show
